SAP gives a compliance result. HEM gives a model that can be used through the design process.

Because HEM runs at half-hourly timesteps, it can show how demand, heat pumps, emitters, ventilation, solar gains, PV, storage, variable tariffs and comfort change across each day and through the year.

That gives assessors and design teams a more realistic basis for design advice, client evidence and decisions beyond compliance.

HEM needs more input data than SAP. It requires the orientation and dimensions of every building element, and greater detail on emitters and ventilation.

A familiar SAP-era workflow based on long forms makes this harder than it needs to be. It increases repeated entry, makes models harder to update when designs change, and makes correctness harder to validate.

Vulcan starts with the building model. Draw or import geometry, apply defaults, update values and models in bulk, compare SAP data where useful, and receive detailed validation checks.

The same model can then support scenarios, results and building regulations submissions. Vulcan is designed to make HEM models fast to create, easier to check, and more useful after the first calculation.
