H3 is the HEM HTC Harness: an open-source tool that connects Home Energy Model outputs with measured building performance.
Models predict and explain building performance. Measurements reflect reality. H3 bridges the gap.
Models show how building inputs shape predicted heat loss. Measured HTC reflects whole-dwelling heat loss in use.
H3 derives HTC from dynamic HEM outputs and compares it with measured HTC. It then calibrates fabric and ventilation inputs to the measured target.
How it works
Predict HTC with H3
Vary external temperature in HEM and derive HTC from the change in dynamic heat-loss outputs.
Add measured HTC
Bring in measured HTC with its method, date range and uncertainty.
Calibrate inputs
Adjust model inputs until H3 predicted and measured HTC align.
Try H3 on a sample dwelling
Change the inputs and compare Design HTC with H3 predicted HTC.

Design HTC is HEM's static HTC from fabric, thermal-bridge and ventilation inputs. It is comparable to SAP's HTC calculation.
H3 predicted HTC is derived from dynamic HEM heat-loss outputs under small outdoor-temperature changes. It can be compared with measured whole-dwelling HTC.
